Bruce and his wife Sharon fell in love with St. John when they vacationed at Virgin Island National Park’s Cinnamon Bay campground in 1984. With family and friends, they built their home in Calabash Boom in 1990. Bruce retired from a small telecommunications firm in the Washington, DC area after a 30 year career with the same company.
Bruce and Sharon volunteer as docents in the Friends of the VINP program at Annaberg and authored the pamphlet “Annaberg Estate & St. John Docent’s Guide.” Bruce researched and produced, along with Bill Stelzer and Steve Simonsen, the award winning video “The Establishment of Virgin Islands National Park”, was one of the editors of the book, “St. John-Life in Five Quarters”, has made a number of presentations on his research and written a numerous articles.
Mr. Schoonover became a Society Board member in 2004, serving as the Society’s Newsletter Editor through 2010. He returned to the Board in 2013 as a Representative and chairman of both the Bellevue Scale and Scope Committee and the 2014-2015 Nominating Committee. Beginning in 2014 he became Media Chair, oversaw the update of the society’s website and currently oversees the publication of both the monthly newsletter and quarterly journal.
