Andromeada (Andro) Childs is the quintessential St. Johnian. She was raised in the family complex in Cruz Bay, with the Cruz Bay dock, beach and park as her playground. Mrs. Childs attended Bethany School, where the SJHS now holds their meetings, then continued her education in New York . After a long stint in NY, and a career with the NYC Family Planning Dept., she and her family moved back to St. John. She soon was offered a job as the director, and only employee, of the tiny Museum at the Battery, Andro, along with a small group of residents interested in the history of St. John, formed the Friends of the Museum, to promote and support the Museum. This same Friends group then became the nucleus for the establishment of the St. John Historical Society in 1974, with Mrs. Childs as a charter member.
Andro currently serves as an Advisor to the board and is an invaluable culture bearer.
